The “Should” Fast

thoughts

Simply stated, from my decades of experience and research, the use of this word is very powerful however can be very damaging.  So, for a very simple experiment, I challenge you to consider fasting and let’s discuss.  Namaste.

My recent conclusions from decades of study of the Bible, The New Testament, Tao Te Ching, and many other perspectives from various religions and philosophies, I’ve come to realize this words amazing power and from my view its potential danger.

What really started this line of thinking came from one of my favorite “pop sociology” books, The Starfish and the Spider: The Unstoppable Power of Leaderless Organizations. It has one key story describing how the Apache nation survived longer than any other tribe in the Americas attacked by the Spaniards, in part because they didn’t have the word/concept “should.”  Coercion is very powerful but not as powerful as choice.

Much more to be written and shared on this.  And very much looking forward to other’s thoughts.  However before you chime in, please try the fast.

  1. For a week, monitor your use and thoughts of this word and its synonyms
  2. Ponder what is motivating its use and the way it makes you feel
  3. Attempt to use alternatives like “I want”, “I choose”, “I will”, etc.
